Post subject:  Still stumped

I have come back to this one several times over the past few months, and tried a number of ways to get the answer. I have a spreadsheet where I have each variation (and its rotations) that I hand created from a list of all possibilities. So I know I haven't missed any combos.

However, my answer is still not accepted... totally stumped.

what do you mean by "it's rotations"? Maybe you can scann in the spreadshead and mail it to me and I'll have a look and tell you what you're doing wrong.

OK... I'll explain what I did with a cut down example (since I need to hunt across 3 computers to find the spreadsheet).

Say it is 3 "pearls" with 3 colours.
First I listed ALL combinations:
Code: Select all
XXX   YXX   ZXX
XXY   YXY   ZXY
XXZ   YXZ   ZXZ
XYX   YYX   ZYX
XYY   YYY   ZYY
XYZ   YYZ   ZYZ
XZX   YZX   ZZX
XZY   YZY   ZZY
XZZ   YZZ   ZZZ

Then grouped them into "rotations" - so listed unique combinations on the left, and each combination that was only a rotation of it to the right.

Code: Select all
XXX
XXY  XYX  YXX
XXZ  XZX  ZXX
XYY  YXY  YYX
XYZ  YZX  ZXY XZY YXZ ZYX
XZZ  ZXZ  ZZX
YYY
YYZ  YZY  ZYY
YZZ  ZYZ  ZZY
ZZZ

So for that example, it would be 10 combos. Is that correct?
